South Korea may occupy a relatively small part of the world map, but the Korean community extends across nearly every continent.
The latest official estimate counts 7,006,703 overseas Koreans living or staying in 181 countries. Even more surprising is how concentrated this enormous population remains: the United States, China and Japan together account for roughly 76.6% of the worldwide total. (Overseas Koreans Agency)
The map reveals a diaspora shaped by geography, citizenship, migration and generations of family history.
The United States Has the World’s Largest Korean Population Outside Korea
The United States ranks first with an estimated:
2,557,047 overseas Koreans
That represents approximately 36.5% of the global total—more than one in every three overseas Koreans counted in the report.
The scale becomes clearer when compared with the other countries on the map. The Korean population in the United States is larger than the combined totals reported for Canada, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Australia, Kazakhstan, Russia and the Philippines.
Canada ranks a distant fourth with 263,153, but North America still contains more than 2.8 million overseas Koreans when the United States and Canada are combined. That is just over 40% of the worldwide total shown in the report. (Overseas Koreans Agency)
China Comes in a Close Second
China has the second-largest overseas Korean population:
1,848,241 people
This equals approximately 26.4% of the global total.
China’s position reflects a population that includes long-established ethnic Korean communities as well as Korean nationals living, studying or working there. However, the official 2025 report recorded a substantial decline from the previous survey.
The Overseas Koreans Agency reported that China’s figure fell by 261,486, or 12.39%. The agency suggested that economic conditions, returns to Korea and migration to other countries may have contributed to the decline. (Overseas Koreans Agency)
Even after that decrease, China remains home to nearly twice as many overseas Koreans as Japan.
Japan Has Nearly One Million Overseas Koreans
Japan ranks third with:
960,970 overseas Koreans
Japan’s number rose by 158,852, or 19.8%, compared with the previous statistics. However, this does not necessarily mean that almost 160,000 people recently moved there.

Together, China and Japan account for approximately 40.1% of all overseas Koreans. This means East Asia remains just as significant to the diaspora as the United States and Canada combined.
The Ten Countries With the Largest Overseas Korean Populations
According to the report, the leading destinations are:
- United States — 2,557,047
- China — 1,848,241
- Japan — 960,970
- Canada — 263,153
- Vietnam — 192,683
- Uzbekistan — 175,338
- Australia — 170,215
- Kazakhstan — 122,554
- Russia — 113,042
- Philippines — 52,695
These ten countries contain approximately 6.46 million people, or just over 92% of the entire overseas Korean population counted in the report. (Overseas Koreans Agency)
That leaves fewer than 551,000 people distributed among the remaining 171 countries.
The diaspora is therefore global—but far from evenly spread.
Vietnam Has Southeast Asia’s Largest Korean Community
Vietnam ranks fifth with 192,683 overseas Koreans, placing it ahead of Uzbekistan and Australia.
Its position stands out because it is the only Southeast Asian country among the top five. The Philippines also enters the ranking at number ten with 52,695, replacing Germany, which had occupied a higher position in the previous statistics. (Overseas Koreans Agency)
The broader South Asia-Pacific region recorded one of the strongest increases in the report. Its overseas Korean population rose by 64,171, or 12.5%. The agency associated this increase with the recovery of tourism-related activity and greater corporate expansion in the region. (Overseas Koreans Agency)
Central Asia Holds a Major Part of the Diaspora
One of the most interesting features of the map is the prominence of Central Asia.
Uzbekistan ranks sixth with 175,338 overseas Koreans, while Kazakhstan ranks eighth with 122,554. Russia follows in ninth place with 113,042.
Combined, these three countries contain more than 410,000 overseas Koreans, or approximately 5.9% of the worldwide total.
The 2025 ranking also placed Kazakhstan above Russia. Official commentary suggested that the effects of the Russia–Ukraine war may have contributed to changes across Russia and the wider Commonwealth of Independent States region. (Overseas Koreans Agency)
Australia Is Another Major Population Center
Australia ranks seventh with 170,215 overseas Koreans.
Although its number is far below those of the United States, China and Japan, Australia still contains one of the world’s ten largest Korean communities. It also forms part of the South Asia-Pacific region that experienced significant growth between the latest reporting periods. (Overseas Koreans Agency)
The contrast on the map is striking: a country geographically distant from the Korean Peninsula contains more overseas Koreans than either Kazakhstan or Russia.
“Overseas Koreans” Does Not Mean Only South Korean Citizens
The total of 7,006,703 includes two broad groups:
- 2,402,026 Korean nationals living or staying abroad
- 4,604,677 ethnic Koreans holding foreign citizenship
In other words, approximately 66% of the people counted are foreign citizens of Korean heritage, while about 34% retain Korean nationality. (Overseas Koreans Agency)
This distinction is important. The map is not simply counting South Koreans who recently moved overseas for employment or education. It also represents established communities whose families may have lived outside the Korean Peninsula for generations.
The Global Total Has Fallen Slightly
Despite growth in some regions, the overall overseas Korean population declined.
The 2025 report counted 7,006,703 people, down from 7,081,510 in the previous reporting period—a decrease of 74,807, or 1.06%. (지표누리)
The South Asia-Pacific and European totals increased, while Northeast Asia, North America and the Russia–CIS region declined. Because approximately 87% of overseas Koreans live in those three larger regions, their reductions outweighed growth elsewhere. (Overseas Koreans Agency)
The figures also show that diaspora populations are not static. People return to Korea, relocate between countries, gain new citizenship, form families and become counted differently as statistical methods improve.
These Numbers Are Estimates, Not an Exact Census
The report is titled 2025 Overseas Koreans Status, but its reference date is December 31, 2024.
South Korean diplomatic missions compiled the estimates using host-country statistics, population censuses, administrative and consular records, overseas-voter information, resident registrations and data collected by Korean community organizations. Because countries collect information about ethnicity, citizenship and residence differently, these figures should be treated as carefully prepared estimates rather than a real-time headcount.
Changes between reports can reflect actual migration, but they can also result from new data sources or revised methods—as Japan’s increase demonstrates.
A Global Community With Three Major Centers
The most powerful message in this map is not simply that seven million overseas Koreans exist.
It is that this global population has three enormous centers:
- The United States, with more than 2.5 million
- China, with nearly 1.85 million
- Japan, with almost one million
Together, they contain more than three-quarters of the entire diaspora.
Beyond those three countries, Korean communities stretch from Canada and Australia to Vietnam, Central Asia, Russia, the Philippines and more than 170 additional nations.
The Korean diaspora may be scattered across the globe, but the map reveals a clear pattern: a worldwide community whose greatest concentrations remain firmly anchored in North America and East Asia.
